Nord LB Bank endorses New Earth Solutions waste management technology and enters an exclusive £50 million finance package to support roll out of biological treatment facilities across the UK.
17 January 2008

New Earth Solutions the specialist biological treatment and waste management company is in the process of developing new facilities and expanding a fast growing portfolio of local authority clients following the signing of a £50 million finance package by the public sector owned and full service commercial bank Norddeutsche Landesbank.

In 2007, over a third of the Nord LB finance package was utilised on two key projects:

  1. Firstly, the completion of a 50,000 tonne per annum ("tpa") facility in Canford Dorset. The operation is one of only two Mechanical Biological Technology (MBT) facilities in the UK to receive approval for a Landfill Allowance Trading Scheme (LATS) diversion monitoring plan from the Environment Agency in 2007.

The facility has been operational in treating source segregated waste for Bristol City Council, Surrey County Council and Eastleigh Borough Council, and is additionally contracted by commercial partner Asda, to deliver the firm's first zero waste to landfill supermarket store in the UK.

The site, in Dorset, is also processing residual black bag municipal waste for Bournemouth Borough Council, and in doing is enabling the Council to measure and effectively meet target waste diversion obligations under the EU Landfill Directive.

  2. Secondly, New Earth Solutions has been contracted by Kent County Council and is in the process of constructing a 50,000 tpa facility in Kent. A contract has been secured for a period of 15 years. Construction work commenced in November 2007 and the facility is anticipated to be fully operational by the end of 2008.

As a result of the balance of the Nord LB financial package, New Earth Solutions is planning to roll out five other treatment facilities across the UK. It is projected that the combined annual turnover will be in excess of £20 million.

Comments Mathias Pahlke, Head of Waste and Environmental Services, Nord LB: "The banking sector appears to be undergoing a noticeable boom in investment in progressive types of waste processing technologies. New Earth Solutions' non-thermal biological facilities mark an exciting new phase in waste management services and combined with a robust and proven business model are highly significant in their potential to deliver a long term solution to current industry and local government wide challenges".

According to Adrian Jones, Finance Director, New Earth Solutions, "We are thrilled to be working in partnership with Nord LB. This is a competitive sector but we have researched and developed an innovative solution to current waste management challenges with proven results. We value the support of Nord LB and anticipate that we are now well on our way to building up a network of facilities on behalf of local authority and commercial clients. This package from Nord LB will enable us to reach our target of recycling up to 2,500,000 tonnes of municipals.

This package will help us deliver significant processing capacity as part of our goal of being one of the few proven solutions offering innovative and competitive packages to our clients. Ultimately this will enable us to reach our target of recycling up to 2,500,000 tonnes of municipal and commercial waste per annum by 2013."

The plant is the first of its kind in the UK to treat residual black bag municipal, source segregated and commercial waste within the same facility. It is anticipated that the Nord LB package will enable New Earth Solutions to reach a target of recycling up to 2,500,000 tonnes of municipal and commercial waste per annum by 2013.

Environment Agency approves New Earth Solutions MBT facility LATS Monitoring Plan
30th October 2007

New Earth Solutions specialist biological waste treatment and recycling company is set to further reinforce its appeal to the local authority sector with the approval by the Environment Agency of a LATS Monitoring Plan for the New Earth bio stabilisation and landfill diversion process.

The Dorset facility is contracted by Bournemouth Borough Council to process Residual Municipal Waste via bio stabilisation and mechanical recovery techniques, and is one of the first MBT facilities in the UK to receive approval for a LATS diversion monitoring plan from the Environment Agency.

A report entitled, 'Monitoring plan to determine performance of a New Earth Solutions MBT plant in terms of Landfill Allowance Trading Scheme (LATS)' explains how New Earth Solutions will proceed with quantifying the amount of residual 'black bag' biodegradable waste that is diverted from landfill on behalf of local authority clients, including Bournemouth Borough Council.

Says Jon Pickering of the Organic Resource Agency (technical consultants to New Earth Solutions), "The monitoring plan is required by the Environment Agency to determine the percentage diversion of biodegradable waste from landfill. This means that New Earth Solutions can demonstrate to local authority clients such as Bournemouth Borough Council that the assessment techniques are robust. The results can then be used to determine the potential performance under the Landfill Allowance Trading Scheme (LATS)".

The monitoring plan will provide Bournemouth Borough Council and New Earth Solutions with a LATS approved certificate by which to prove the rates of diversion achieved via New Earth technology.

According to Peter Gillatt, Managing Director at New Earth Solutions: "The report is crucial in the development of an approved programme to provide Bournemouth Borough Council with a formalised measure of the bio-stabilisation and diversion processes underway. The results of the monitoring programme will enable the local authority to determine the extent to which it is achieving landfill diversion targets with a fully accountable and approved strategy in place to report exactly what is being achieved in meeting Landfill Diversion obligations as required by the EU Landfill Directive".

Previous tests undertaken on New Earth technology by the Organic Resource Agency have proven that in excess of 80% of biodegradable waste can be diverted from landfill when treated by a New Earth facility.

New Earth Solutions has secured contracts with Kent County Council, Essex County Council and Bournemouth Borough Council, and as a result of project financing from the German Bank Nord LB will continue to rapidly establish new facilities throughout the UK. top

New Earth Solutions biological waste management firm responds to government white paper on renewable energy by investing in Anaerobic Digestion as alternative energy source for pilot facility in Poole
7th August 2007

New Earth Solutions, the specialist biological treatment and waste management firm, contracted by local authorities including Bournemouth Borough Council and Kent County Council to process both source segregated and residual ‘black bag’ municipal waste, has responded to the recent Government white paper, ‘Meeting the Energy Challenge’ by newly investing in Anaerobic Digestion (AD) technology at its facility in Canford, Poole.

The white paper, which sets out the Government’s international and domestic energy strategy, promotes Anaerobic Digestion as a potentially ‘clean’ ‘secure’ and ‘affordable’ energy resource, and announces key changes to the UK renewable energy subsidy programme to support the development of competitive new technologies in the UK.

It is proposed that the Anaerobic Digestion process will be trialled at the New Earth biological treatment plant in Poole. The pilot plant will encompass technology specifically designed to treat solid wastes in order to generate sustainable electricity. The anaerobic digestion process is complimentary to New Earth’s highly successful biological treatment programme, and the development will enable the firm to generate its own electricity requirements.

Comments Peter Gillatt, Managing Director at New Earth, “Our main objective is to be energy self sufficient and while using clean and safe renewable electricity, reduce our exposure to increasing energy costs and reliance on outside suppliers as far as possible.

The recent Energy white paper and renewable energy subsidy programme has given us a significant cost saving opportunity and the chance to harness an emergent and sustainable technology. We hope to safeguard the reliability of affordable energy supplies in all of our facilities across the UK”.

Anaerobic Digestion is a biological process which works by breaking down organic materials within a sealed airtight vessel known as a ‘digester’. Consequently biogas is released and this can be utilised as a fuel to generate electrical power.

New Earth Solution’s Chairman, Bill Riddle, has a successful track record in pioneering renewable energy from municipal waste. A power station beside the New Earth Solutions facility in Canford, has been utilising methane gas from a nearby landfill site to generate electricity supplies to the National Grid for a period of over twelve years.

“The added advantage of Anaerobic Digestion” continues Gillatt “is that we are making a commitment to drastically reduce our Carbon Footprint, while positively addressing the challenge of long term energy supplies”.

The firm, which specialises in providing effective solutions for the treatment of both source segregated and unsegregated Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) via bio stabilisation and mechanical recovery techniques, aims to be the first waste management facility in the UK to build a bespoke in-house Anaerobic Digestions technology system and become self-reliant for power. top

The New Earth process has been independently assessed by technical consultants the Organic Resource Agency (ORA), according to Environment Agency guidelines. top

New Earth Solutions take a look at the future of climate change by staging an event for Compost Awareness Week in conjunction with the National Trust’s Kingston Lacy Estate in Dorset
9 May 2007

pic1New Earth Solutions, the biological waste treatment and recovery firm, is marking Compost Awareness Week 2007 with a children’s activity and tree planting event, designed to underline the link between diverting mixed black bag and municipal waste from landfill and the long term reduction of climate change and global warming in relation to conservation, heritage, and learning.

The event, which is scheduled to be held on Wednesday 9 May, has been organised in direct partnership with the National Trust at Kingston Lacy in Wimborne, Dorset. Thirty school children from local primary, Wimborne First School are invited to learn about the significant impact of their actions on the natural environment, and will be encouraged to consider the effects of seasonal change on parkland and gardens.

“We are delighted to be working in partnership with the National Trust, and for the opportunity to show our support for what is essentially the largest conservation organisation in Europe”, says New Earth Contracts Director Peter Mills.

“New Earth Solutions is committed to helping local authorities meet tough landfill diversion and waste recycling targets, but it is equally imperative to encourage young people to consider where their household and general waste goes beyond the bin liner, and ultimately reinforce how small actions can reduce the impact of climate change for future generations”.

At the event every school child will plant an individual Field Maple seed in a recycled pot and attach a personal label, before each of the seeded pots is placed in the gardener’s potting shed and reserved for planting as saplings in the Autumn.
The school children will initially receive a demonstration on the benefits of using old bark from the estate as a soil conditioner and water retainer for newly planted trees. Bark collected from the extensive parkland and gardens will be mulched into an organic matter by the head gardener, and spread across the freshly potted seeds.

“The Field Maple is an ancient tree and an iconic symbol of the West Country”, says Mills.

“New Earth Solutions were keen to support an initiative of long term value and it is hoped that the Field Maples will last for hundreds of years. The process of reducing methane and other harmful greenhouse emissions through the diversion of waste from landfill is inextricably connected to the safeguarding and protection of our historic buildings, countryside and quality of life. We are grateful to the National Trust for allowing us to explore some of these key messages with them, and quite literally on their doorstep”.

New Earth Solutions is currently overseeing all aspects of waste management on behalf of local authority clients, ranging from financing, land acquisition and planning to engineering, design, permitting and operations.

The firm is currently rolling out contracts for facilities in regions across the UK, and current clients include Bournemouth Borough Council, Bristol City Council, Kent County Council and Essex County Council. top

New Earth Solutions biological treatment and recycling facility in Poole set to expand in support of landfill diversion initiatives by local authorities in Bournemouth and Bristol
12 February 2007

New Earth Solutions biological treatment and recycling facility in Canford, Poole, is set to expand in response to an increased demand for the processing of mixed municipal household waste, including kitchen scraps and cardboard, via bio stabilisation and mechanical recovery (MBS) technologies.

The existing facility at Canford, which is being expanded in order to process 50,000 tonnes per annum of municipal and commercial waste, will be extended to provide an additional 2100m2 floor space capacity for waste reception and preparation.

According to New Earth Solutions Director of Planning, Ted Bleszynski, “We are seeing a demand for separate contracts from neighbouring local authorities who are sharing the facility at Canford. New Earth technology is specifically designed to enable modular expansion of capacity and has built-in flexibility to process both residual household and source segregated organics simultaneously. Consequently we can adapt our services to meet local authority contract requirements and inevitable changes in the waste flow as they evolve over time”.

“The New Earth technology”, continues Bleszynski, “benefits from ready capability, and by being able to respond and adapt speedily to changes in market conditions, without additional cost or inconvenience to clients”.

New Earth recently invested over £500,000 in what it believes to be the UK’s largest and most comprehensive emissions treatment facility, comprising of wet scrubbers and bio filters. Each facility is fully enclosed, and highly efficient emissions controls are a hall mark of New Earth Solutions technology, making for no outward release of odours or bio-aersols as associated with traditional composting techniques.

The firm, which has won five contracts with separate local authorities in the last 10 months, has the proven technology to divert over 80% of the biodegradable content of municipal waste from landfill, as established in accordance with recently published Environment Agency guidance and independently assessed by technical consultants the Organic Resource Agency. top

New Earth Solutions helps to deliver waste delivery strategy for Bournemouth Borough Council
25 September

New Earth Solutions is assisting Bournemouth Borough Council in its bid to reach challenging statutory recycling, landfill diversion and national waste strategy targets, following the award of a five year Municipal Waste Disposal Contract.

Under the new contract, the New Earth Solutions treatment facility in Canford, Poole, will be processing household waste collected within the Borough to divert biodegradable waste from landfill and recover recyclable materials. Initial outputs will be in the region of 10,000 tonnes per year but this figure will increase in line with Government targets.

Comments Peter Mills,
“At present, unless biodegradable waste has been separated before it enters the waste stream it usually ends up in a landfill site. Tests have shown that in excess of 80% of biodegradable waste can be diverted from landfill when treated by New Earth technology.

The advantage of a New Earth system is that it enables biodegradable municipal waste to be recovered and treated in our fully enclosed facilities with no risk of adverse environmental side effects. We are fully committed to reaching statutory Government targets via composting, recycling, and recovery techniques and our operational capacity is directly in line with the requirements of the Landfill Allowance Trading Scheme”.

Bournemouth Borough Council recently introduced its own local objectives alongside National Waste Strategy targets set by central government.

Councillor John Hayter the council’s recycling champion said, “We are determined to meet National Waste Strategy and local ‘best value’ targets in relation to the reduction, recovery and diversion of municipal waste from landfill. I am excited at the prospect of using a local company that will help to achieve our targets using up to date waste diversion processes. The New Earth system will provide an important contribution to our environmental performance”.

The company which was founded in 2002 has the technology to treat both source segregated and mixed ‘black bag’ residual waste through natural biological treatment and physical separation processes, as authorised by the State Veterinary Service and in compliance with Animal By-Products and Regulations 2003. top

New Earth tests reveal solution to landfill fines for Local Authorities
8 September

New Earth Solutions has become the UK’s first waste processing and recycling facility to successfully divert over 80% of the biodegradable content of mixed ‘black bag’ waste from landfill, offering an alternative solution to traditional incineration and landfill based techniques

In the latest of a series of large scale tests at the New Earth facility in Dorset, the composting technology has been proven robust for the treatment of high volume biodegradable municipal waste through an entirely non-thermal process.

The findings are revealed as local authorities update waste disposal strategies under the EC Directive on Landfill, and put measures in place to reduce the amount of ‘greenhouse gas’ or methane producing biodegradable municipal waste that is being diverted to landfill. Penalty fines of up to £150 are to be levied on authorities for every excess tonne of waste that is land filled.

Comments New Earth Director of Contracts, Peter Mills:“New Earth is dedicated to helping local authorities meet statutory waste diversion targets on time and to steadily increasing the volume of waste that can be fully recovered or recycled, and consequently diverted from landfill”.

“We are a proven technology and we believe that our low-impact, fully enclosed facilities with no outward emissions of odours or bio-aerosols have a key advantage over competing technologies”.

The New Earth technology is equipped to receive, treat and recover all forms of household waste through natural biological treatments and physical separation processes, and fully authorised by the State Veterinary Service to process ‘black bag’ waste in compliance with Animal By-Products Regulations (2003).

The company is rolling out composting and resource recovery facilities across the UK, with the objective of diverting 1.2 million tonnes of compost per annum by 2013, and 2.5 million tonnes per annum by 2020. top

New Earth Solutions tipped for expansion with
£25 Million finance package from Nord/LB

10 August

New Earth Solutions is currently finalising negotiations for a £25 million financing package from the German bank NORD/LB.

The company, which was founded in 2002, has already developed a 50,000 tonne-per-annum fully enclosed facility in Dorset, and will use the package to build up to ten 50,000 tonne facility plants over the next five years, and to fulfil a recent contract awarded by Kent County Council.

Comments, New Earth Managing Director, Bill Riddle:

“This new partnership with a European bank means that we are now well on our way to building up a network of New Earth facilities, and within very real reach of our goal to recycle up to 2,500,000 tonnes of municipal waste per annum by 2013”.

“New Earth is committed to helping Local Authorities meet compulsory targets, and consequently to diverting large quantities of waste from landfill. NORD/LB’s expertise in the waste management sector, and support of our business is crucial to making this happen”.

New Earth and NORD/LB will finalise the financing arrangement with the support of BDO Stoy Hayward LLP over the next ten weeks.

According to Mathias Pahlke, Head of Waste and Environmental Services at NORD/LB in London, “New Earth‘s non-thermal biological treatment technology marks an exciting new phase in waste management services, and combined with a robust business model, is  significant in its’ potential to deliver a long term solution to current challenges”.

New Earth facilities are fully enclosed, with a sophisticated automated air handling and treatment system and no outward emissions of odours or bio-aerosols normally associated with traditional composting processes.

Each facility is equipped to receive, treat and recover the value of both source segregated and ‘black’ bag waste through natural biological treatments, screening and magnetic separation processes, as authorised by the State Veterinary Service, and in compliance with the Animal By Products Regulations (2003).

On average individuals in the UK generate over half a tonne of household waste per year, and according to the Government’s Waste Strategy 2000, there will be a total requirement for 15 million tonnes of composting annually by 2010. top

New Earth takes to the streets with composting message for inner cities
3 May 2006

New Earth (composting) Solutions is taking to the streets with an urban art campaign in a bid to encourage inner city youth to support composting and recycling.

The national campaign to reach inner city areas, where waste generation is high and recycling is difficult, launches in London on Saturday May 6th, the start of Compost Awareness Week 2006.

New Earth has commissioned community artists, Urban Regeneration, to recreate a life size graffiti style mural, based on designs by children at the Kids Hayward Adventure Playground in the London Borough of Islington.

The campaign will then be rolled out across other major UK cities including Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle, Birmingham and Bristol.

“Learning to value our waste is absolutely crucial in dictating the quality of life for generations to come”, comments New Earth’s Peter Mills. “We wanted to use a medium which young people inurban areas can relate to, and we will only be using specially designated sites, where full permission has been given.”

“We want to encourage young people to consider where their rubbish goes beyond the bin-liner, and make it easier for them to distinguish between biodegradable items that can be composted, and carbon-rich waste that can be recycled.”

New Earth are responsible for developing a state of the art, fully enclosed composting and recovery technology with no outward emissions, which is suitable for inner city use.

Adds Peter Mills: “Local authorities have been set challenging targets to increase their recycling but while environmental issues are higher profile in the more affluent areas of the country, it is the inner cities we have to reach if we are to be successful in our drive to be green.

“We believe our technology provides a lasting solution to the current challenges faced by the recycling and waste management sector, particularly in built up or urban areas. But equally important is a change of mind set, and for these young people developing a sense of responsibility, and feeling empowered, now and in the future is key.”

The competition at the Kids Hayward Adventure Playground was centred around a My Favourite Piece of Rubbish theme. The winning entry was selected by Paul Barlow of Graphotism magazine.

A recycling starter-kit has also been donated to the centre by New Earth in the form of composting bins in which the young people using the centre can convert their own food and garden waste into valuable compost.

In recognition of wider issues surrounding climate change, New Earth will be planting trees at the Hayward Adventure Playground to make the event carbon neutral.

Recycling facts and figures:

According to a national audit from DEFRA:

• In 2004/5 the lowest amount of recycling took place in the North East (16.4%) followed closely by London (17.7%) with residents in Newham (6.2%), Tower Hamlets (7.4%) and Liverpool (7.6%), recycling the least.

• Households in England produce 25 million tonnes of waste every year. Over half of this consists of garden waste, waste paper and board, and kitchen waste.

• On average every person in the UK now produces about seven times their own weight in waste a year.

• What makes up household waste? Garden Waste 20%, Scrap metal/White goods 5%, Wood 5%, Dense plastic 4%, Plastic film 4%, Textiles 3%, Metal packaging 3%, Nappies 2%, Soil 3%, Paper and Board 18%, Kitchen Waste 17%, General Household Sweepings 9% and Glass 7%

• What can be recycled? Plastics, textiles, cans, paper, wood, kitchen waste, garden waste, batteries, glass and card. top

Rigorous tests for New Earth technology
23 March 2006

In excess of 70% of biodegradable waste which currently ends up in landfills, could be diverted by a newly-developed composting system and avoid contributing to the creation of damaging green house gases.

The system, developed by New Earth composting, is currently undergoing rigorous testing by technical consultants, the Organic Resource Agency (ORA).

The composting facility represents a significant investment from the privately owned company, and aimed at providing services for local authorities, could prove the answer to their growing rubbish problems.

At present, unless biodegradable waste has been separated before it enters the waste stream, it usually ends up in a landfill site. The advantage of the New Earth system is that it enables biodegradable waste to be recovered and treated efficiently without adverse environmental side effects.

Comments New Earth’s Peter Mills: “We believe ORA’s tests will confirm that our technology is the most effective in separating biodegradable waste so that it can be recovered and does not end up in landfill sites.

“Landfill diversion is a key advantage our system has over competing technologies and previous tests have shown that in excess of 70% of the biodegradable waste can bediverted by our treatment system”.

New Earth’s reference facility in Dorset is the first of its kind in the UK to be assessed according to guidelines imposed by the Environment Agency, which administers waste regulation on behalf of the Department of Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs (DEFRA). top
